Post subject:  Colonial Tonewoods -- Steve is Awesome

As builders, we are very fortunate to have some wonderful individuals in the business of supplying us tonewood. This post is about Colonial Tonewoods - a supplier that I highly recommend. I've been buying tonewood from Steve for close to 10 years now. The wood quality has always been top tier and very fairly priced. I am quite fastidious about the tonewoods I use in my guitars and Steve has always been able to meet my expectations when I've given him specific parameters for what I'm looking for. I just recently took delivery of a couple thousand dollar order (mostly fretboards) and was just incredibly pleased with what I got. Anyway, no point to this other than to say that Colonial Tonewoods really is one of the best suppliers out there and to check out Steve's site if you haven't already.

BTW, here are 2 guitars I've built from back/sides purchased from Colonial:

By Toonces long time. Those two guitars are totally beautiful. Colonial Tonewoods? You know when I first saw that name the first thing that popped into my mind was actual colonial era Tonewoods. I wonder if there were builders in 1780? Of course I'm sure fiddles were being made. Oh well not to sidetrack the thread is Colonial Tonewoods a member here? I do support this forum. But again buddy that is not only fine wood but the finest work. Congrats my friend.

Thanks Lonnie!!! Steve is indeed a sponsor here and he's in Virgina -- I think that factored into how he arrived at "Colonial Tonewoods".

Steve, often has a fairly unique selection of interesting woods. I go to different suppliers for certain things. For example, Hibdon Hardwood has had some incredibly nice Cocobolo in stock for the past few years. Colonial Tonewoods often has very nice Mahogany on hand and he will often get some beautiful sets of alternative species like Tiger Myrtle. He also has a lot of somewhat plain species like Black Walnut but the cut is excellent and those sets are very affordable.

Every week or so, I'll just take 10 minutes to quickly browse through my favorite suppliers and see if anything speaks to me. I also do a fair amount of reassign nowadays as I can save a lot of money that way and I pretty good at avoiding losses from choosing unsuitable wood. However, for things like fretboards and neck blanks -- I almost always source from a supplier as I just find those things much, much riskier trying to locate and mill myself.

I'll have to check out Steve, always good to have reliable sources. I'll throw out one for Hibdon Hardwoods, I ordered a Mahogany neck blank from them a couple weeks ago and the wood was much nicer than the photo which was already good. Great speedy service too.
