Hello, Im planning on starting my first SS. Only built Classicals so far. I have some sitka tops and was wondering about using Spanish cypress for B&S since I have a lot of that wood available. How do you think it could contribute to the sound? something like mahogany? Thanks for any tips! Bruno |

Haven't heard one, but I did read an opinion from someone more experienced than I am. Quote: "Spanish" cypress is the traditional wood of choice for flamenco guitars. It’s a formerly cheap and plentifully available Mediterranean wood which is wonderfully aromatic and easy to work. For much of the Spanish guitar’s early life this cypress was the poor man’s wood for backs and sides; it was the most common default material for anyone who could not afford the more expensive rosewood. For all its humble origins, though, and in spite of its comparative lack of density, properly cut and selected Spanish Cypress has at least as good a "Q" as East Indian rosewood and a much better one than maple. Even though it isn’t used for making steel string guitars, I know of no reason at all why it wouldn’t work very well on them. (Ervin Somogyi)

I'd use it. Leave the B & S a bit thicker. Mike |

I built an archtop with a carved back and sides in cypress. Came out beautifully. This was urban salvage wood ( the top was carved from redwood reclaimed from an old water tower) so I've never had the chance to do more. Wouldn't doubt it for a second. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I love cypress guitars. The only cypress steel strings I have seen have been made by Lakewood. ![]() Here is a review of the guitar below http://www.acousticmagazine.com/reviews ... 6-cp-2999/ |
