My wife called from a local thrift store, asking if I would like a bunch of old Swedish and German hand tools, all for ten bucks. Well, yes, darlin'. Yes I would. :-)

Can't wait to see them cleaned up. Least ways, that's what I'd do. Nice score!

Ha! Now that is funny! :-)

My wife has been a junk store junkie since before I met her way, way back in 1977. A majority of her wardrobe is made up of beautiful, vintage clothing that she's rescued and every room of our home is decorated with tables, chairs, lamps, textiles, art pieces, etc., all of which she has salvaged. She has found some remarkable treasures over the years. Basically, all I have to do is show her something I might be interested in and sooner or later she'll bring it home.

I do plan to try and clean these up a bit, although I love the patina that time and use puts on old tools, so my aim will be to disturb the surfaces as little as possible.

Wonderful - those bench chisels look like a whole set by Eskiltuna from Sweden. These are among the best made edge tools ever and you will never have to upgrade. The spokeshave, however, is a PIA because the blade setting is held by friction and it takes a deft hand to bend the tangs just right to keep a setting without requiring too much force for small adjustments. They are satisfying to use if you can overcome the learning curve. And the bent carving chisels are the really great when you need them!

Good work

Thanks, Ed. Yeah, I was pretty stoked when she sent me a snap from the store. I texted her back immediately with, "YES, I WANT THOSE!" Turned out to be quite a haul. The little spokeshave was a surprise bundled in with the others. There was also a funky old coping saw. Don't really need either of them, as I already have better options. But you never know when an odd or unique tool might come in handy, so I'm pleased to have them in my workshop.

You really only need to flatten and polish the back of the chisel and sharpen the edge. You can leave the tops of the blades with the patina they have developed over the years.
Nice find!

I don't envy having to sharpen all that steel...

Clay - Yup, patina is cool.

Miguel - I agree! Luckily there is no need to rush. I'm going to take my time and keep it fun.

Wud - You know it, brother!

I count 6 Berg chisels, 5+ gouges and a spokeshave for $10. Wow! It cost me over $250 for a good set of 10 E.A. Berg chisels and that was a good bargain for me. Your wife did great - those Swedish chisels have some of the finest grained steel ever used for woodworking tools!

Congrats on your find, those look to be in excellent shape!

Sweden is our next door neigbour, and although we don't like to admit it, they did make some terrific tools back in the day. ;) Those "blue label" EA Berg chisels are among my favourites, and often found at flea markets and antique stores over here. I almost almost never see them with the original handles though, I believe they were often sold without handles back in the day, as craftsmen were expected to make their own.

Here's a couple of pictures of some of my vintage Scandinavian chisels, all save for one with shop made handles. In addition to EA Berg, Eskilstuna, Jernbolaget and Kongsberg are some other good brands, if you can find them.
