I'll take a picture of mine in the morning, Dan. Pretty low tech. Alex |

Check out KMG guitars's 'Fret Slot Spacing Jig'; they come with instructions to build a slotting jig. I have one, and it works just fine. Like the OP I started with a saw first and obtained the templates and jig afterwards. I've been very pleased and the price is realistic. |

Here's mine, Dan. ![]() ![]() ![]() The mitre box is made from hardwood scrap. The fret scale is actually for checking fret board level, but is accurately machined to scale, and the registration pin is the chuck end of a drill bit CA'd in place. Took about an hour or so to to make. Alex Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Believe it or not, we just have the kids use an LMI fretsaw with a depth stop similar to the Stew Mac image in the guitar making woodshop class I help out in. The students mark the fret positions on both sides of the board and connect the dots with the saw. Very nice slots and a low-tech solution I wanted to mention as an alternative. If you're worried about making sure the slots are cut square, you can get the 90° guide from David Barron. Attachment: Fret_Saw.jpg

I recently made one similar to the one every has: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby1638/ ... 776959267/ I put 2 clamps on it ( Harbor Fright, $6 each) but they are spread far enough apart that they don't both land on the FB for a couple of frets from either end. Plan accordingly If you have a table saw or a reliable band saw, it is easy to make the baseboard and the two upright sides all as one length, then cut it in half on the TS or BS, then screw them down to another layer of baseboard squeezing the two halves together to grab the saw just the right amount. A little wax (paraffin) on the saw blade and Robert is your mother's brother. I made my sides the right height to cut the correct depth fret slots for the StewMac steel slotting jig and a 1/4" fretboard. I can add or subtract some material for the saw to bear on if I do something different in the future. Ed |
