Post subject:  Different take on the armrest bevel
I have been thinking of an armrest bevel for awhile now, and really havn't felt comfortable with the whole veneer thing, so I decided to try something a little different.
So far everthing is fitting quit well.
Time will tell if it will work out but it has been fun anyway.
Here are a few pics of my current progress.
I have treated the heel graft in the same manner.
If anyone can see a problem coming at me that I am blind to, my thanks for pointing it out.
American cherry b&s, curly maple bevel and bindings heel plate.

There's a lot of ways to skin this cat and everyone has to find their own way. If you think it through and exercise some patience I'm sure you'll get good results. I'll be interested to see how it turns out!

Looks like a cool idea. How are you planning to blend the binding into the bevel? Are you going to hand cut the binding channel under the bevel? I see the purfling line but that looks like it will hit where the top is.

My plan is to cut the binding channel as normal, half inch or so into the bevel. There is only bwb purfling under the bevel. Where the binding channel and the purfling channel meet, I will terminate the binding, once the binding is complete I can carve the bevel to shape. In my mind, I can see how it is coming together.The binding will be from the same board and will hopefully plane/sand out seamlessly.

Interesting approach. If I understand you correctly, when you say "The binding will be from the same board," you mean that the bindings will also be curly maple and that you are hoping for a seamless intersection where they intersect the bevel. Yes? Same thing at the end graft then, too. I can see that being a snap with ebony. Could be tough to get an invisible joint with maple. If that poses a problem, a simple mitre might dress it up enough to provide a satisfactory result.

Lately I've been pondering something similar to what you are doing here, so thanks for sharing the pics. I've yet to work up the nerve to try a bevel. Maybe this will give me the impetus to go for it. [:Y:]

I'm just finishing my first bevel, and used the veneer approach. This one is ebony with ebony bindings,
so like George said, it's easy to blend the binding into the veneer. But when I thought about a bevel
using other woods, I also thought about making the entire bevel out of the same wood as the binding,
what you did. So I'm also interested in seeing how it turns out.
