Post subject:  wood identification?

well just to post some of my recent findings:

I had a chance to buy app 100 strips of wood advertised as rosewood.
the sizes of the strips vary form 20 inches long to 30 inches long.
they are about 1 inch wide and app 11/16 thick, making them usable for fingerboard binding, and perhaps some body binding...

they did lok rather rough, dirty and most were grey.
when planing one down some really nice wood showed up.
brownish red with some streaks.

today i planed a few more down, and the wood varies quite a lot.

here are a few examples:

and when wetted down with some spirit:

it does have that rosewood smell, and the pieces sink in water.
I am just wondering what type it could be.

here is a close up:

and the end grain:

i would be guessing cocobolo or honduran (based on weight and redness) but am curious to hear your thoughts?

regards Aram

The small strips are Honduran rosewood. The second batch is Brazilian rosewood.

You can always go to your local cooperative office and give them a sliver of wood. They'll send it off to the state university and analyze it for free. I've done it and it was nice to know for certain. Took about a week.
