use a square to align up 90 deg hole use undersized bit and have a backup piece of scrap wood clamped on headstock.(reduces splintering) Use reamer and carefully measure until you achieve perfect fit |

Sure you can use a hand drill and a brad point drill -- but you also need to make the little fixture shown in this DIY video a square is not enough of a guide. http://www.todayshomeowner.com/video/di ... lar-holes/ |

I would drill from the top with an undersized bit, and have the scrap block firmly clamped to the back . In case of small splintering, hopefully the tuner will cover the splinter or reaming out the hole from the backside will hide most of it. |

I drill all the way through with a small diameter bit. Then I use that hole to guide the larger brad point bit halfway in from each side. No breakout. If the bit is sharp, there's usually no tearout on the entry either. |

What is a pillar drill? Is this a Euro name for a drill press? |

This works really well if you are drilling 2 different diameters, Like a hole for the shaft and a larger one for the bushing of a tuner. |
