In a recent thread on top baking, Bob Shanklin shared his excellent jig for cooking tops. I recently bought 3 amazing sets of Bocote from the Zootman and needed to get them stickered and weighted down immediately. Which I did, but then I saw Bob's jig so I whipped this up. It will double as a top baker when the time comes. Thanks Bob!

Hi Ed, Not like I have handled a ton of tonewood - I am only working on acoustic builds 20 and 21 - so barely out of the "construction" stage... That being said, I have some of EIR, Ziricote, Peruvian Walnut, Bubinga and Hog on the shelf - that I compare the tap tones to when I bring something in. Where the Peruvian Walnut taptone I would say is "cardboard" and the Ziricote rings like a bell, the Bocote ring is closer to the EIR - dark - nice sustain... It will be interesting to see how it comes out in the spectrographic analysis using Trevor Gore's formulas for calculating the resonance frequency... I built a rather snazzy Excel file to spit out the number if anyone (who owns the books) is interested.... I consider myself a whiz on Excel but that particular exercise took days to get it right.... Rob Rob, I did one too, got stuck debugging it and was helped out by a Ozzy statistic computer analyst guy (quick fix, fresh eye), but it's still out compared to Trevors by about 2%, not sure why. Would like to get a copy of yours, send you mine for a look if you want? |

There's some help here which should assist you with most problems and the rest is likely to be due to ill-conditioning in Excel. |

Rob I may take you up on that Robbie. My kids in Auz right now and will be returning the favour of all those fiddle lessons and bringing me back the Gore Gilet books. That's a great looking way to to keep wood flat. I tend to put anything suspect of cupping at the bottom of the ever growing wood pile. I think the set of Bocote I got from Aaron sits about mid way. It must have several hundred pounds on it.

All of the trouble with Excel W/R people trying to reproduce Trevor's calculations have made me very happy that I have never once touched Excel for doing a scientific calculation. We use it to set up proposal budgets and that is it! (and I never trust them without pulling out a calculator and summing the numbers.) Lot's of Excel hatin' here. |
