Well it didn't start out being all Lance but it ended up that way. My wife's friend from out of town was staying with us for a couple of days. Her husband is a solid player and she decided she would like to commission a guitar for his 60th birthday. It was pretty comical. I had the girls out in the shop, wine in hand, going through the wood pile. "I don't know, I think that tops a little too dark to go with those sides" and a lot like that. I did try to explain that there might be other things to consider than the colour of the wood. ![]() Attachment: rsz_img_1436.jpg Attachment: rsz_img_1380.jpg Attachment: rsz_img_1393.jpg Attachment: rsz_img_1406.jpg Attachment: rsz_img_1409.jpg Back and sides- Koa from Lance. Redwood top - From Lance and even the Ablam paua back strip material was from Lance a number of years ago. I wish I had more of this. Thought I would share this just because there is a LOT of Lance in this one. Thanks Buddy!!! |

Very classy Danny!!! ![]() Idea for you... don't know if you name your models like many builders do but with your last name and offering a nod to Richard Thompson this one could be a Vincent "Black Lightning..." Beautiful guitar! |

Quick question on those sides - I am going to be using koa for some sides. From reading others' experiences, do you have any advice for avoiding the greenish hue that can come out in the bending process? |

Beautiful! The bevel looks fantastic. This set of koa I got from Lance looks like it could be related (I hope)! |

Hi Mayor: Yes - while bending avoid having the koa or Tazz Blackwood (same family...) having any direct contact with metal. This means foil, metal slats, etc. Instead wrap it in craft paper and you should be good to go. If using a bending machine wrapping in craft paper and a light spritz with water and Bob's your uncle. |

Thanks you all. Very kind of you. Mayor, I think what Hesh said is about a light spritz is right on. My experience with craft paper, the one time I used it with Koa, gave me the most green. The last couple I did was just SS slats. Less water is better butI have a feeling some wood just has more of whatever it is that causes it. Nice sets James! The Koa is beautiful. What's the one on the right? If he's selling off this stuff to us, I'd like to see what he's keeping in his stash. ![]() FWIW. The more I use Redwood the more I want to use Redwood. Maybe not the best thing for a flatpikin' dred, but otherwise a very versatile wood. |

Beautiful guitar! OK, I give up. Fill me in. I know who Richard Thompson is but I don't get the reference. I'm guessing he drove one? I have named a few for sure. Sometimes the name just comes to you. Sometimes not. Black Lightning eh? I like it. |

"I know who Richard Thompson is but I don't get the reference. I'm guessing he drove one?" No, he wrote a classic song about one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yw2yKNLEPc |
