Strap button with 1/4 x 20 threads?

Is there such a thing? It would handily help hide a boo boo...

Ed why not turn a plug, install, redrill for standard strap buttons and use the felt washer and I just measured one and when smushed down the felts cover slightly over 1/2" of boo boo? Felts come in black and white and the convention is to use one that matches your bindings color.

Well, I'll tells ya why. When I was dribbling ca around the neck inserts, a drop went down the threads. Not usually a problem, you can usually thread the bolt in a bit, scrape out the glue, repeat until the bolt goes all the way in. Sadly, I wasn't paying enough attention and poked a hole out behind the insert. I glued it back but you can still see the mark. If, though, I could get a 1/4 x 20 strap button, I could just share the threads of the insert between the neck bolt and the strap button...

Got it - do you have any access to a lathe? You could turn your own button drilled out for 1/4 20 and call it a feature.... :D

1/4" 20 thread is a machine thread. Unless your guitar is made of aluminum or other metal (or a very hard wood such as solid African Blackwood), the wood WILL NOT hold such a thread. You can try with 1/4" lag bolts however... Also your threaded insert will not have enough length for you to screw anything onto in addition to your neck bolt (unless it is an extra long one, and installing that without damage will not be easy)

I suggest patching the booboo with a piece of wood that was used to carve the neck (you do have scraps right?) and then cover that with a standard strap button. If you do this right, the repair should be nearly invisible. Drill out the booboo, then use a plug cutter (if you have one) or other methods to fashion a plug out of that same wood, and glue the thing back in. If that's not acceptable and you must have perfection, remove the neck and all inserts, and then CUT the heel off, glue in a new heel, and recarve.

Finally, a burst will hide a multitude of sins.

I think the easiest route would be to take a piece of 1/4-20 threaded rod, turn down a section to a straight shaft and glue that into a matching tight hole in the strap button. This would be fairly simple work for someone with a lathe. I could certainly do it but there has to be someone closer to you Ed-

What kind of glue would you trust to bond with metal permanently?

For the force on a strap button I would trust CA assuming I degreased and roughed up the metal a little along the part going into the wood. Also,a nice tight press fit would be ideal.

If you were able to put a little straight knurl on the end going in that wouldn't hurt either.

You'd want a slot in the button end too so you can unscrew it when needed. Why not just use a bolt and call it the grunge look...(kidding, sort of)

If you get a bolt turned down you can put the bolt end in ice and heat the button for a press fit, once they equalize in temperature you won't get them apart.

I would be inclined to plug it with a hard contrasting wood and mount a regular strap button to it.

Do what Rod says using this: Loctite #638 "for bonding cylindrical objects" it will pull out of the wood long before the button comes off the shaft :mrgreen:

I made a strap button with an imbedded bolt for an access port years ago. It was a smaller (10-32 IIRC) bolt but the principle is the same. I drilled and countersunk a hole in a piece of hardwood glued the bolt in using CA then sanded the surface flat and glued on a cap of wood (actually with some veneer stripes). I chucked the bolt into my drillpress and turned the button with files and sandpaper. The button serves as the endpin and the knob for unlocking the access port. It has held up well for years.
