I'm wanting to go around the rim with .064 of abalone, bordered by two .030 b/w/b fine line perfs. It looks to be wide enough that the perf channel will be at the limits of the linings, with essentially just a sliver of wood holding the top on. Once bound, I suppose the structural integrity is regained, but does this make anyone else nervous, when using wide perf schemes? Anyone seen any failures from this? |

I have done quite a few with the B/W/B with pearl between and go to the depth equal to the pearl thickness and have never had problems. Actually if you use reverse kerf lining you and .070 binding you will have about 1/16 of full depth top and the about 1/2 of the top thickness on the kerf lining. Fred |

As I use a .090" binding, and purfling over .225", many times my purfling extends over the kerfing. My outer portions of the purfling are always wood, and my tops are rather thick for most folks at around .115" or so. So, I usually can rout a full .062" deep and still have a good .032" or more below the kerfing. I don't consider it a problem. Just make sure you have good tight glue joints. |
