Post subject:  Mini humbucker on a resonator

I have a customer that wants me to install a jazz-style mini humbucker on his reso. He's not after a tone particular to the bucker, but got it thinking it would fit under the strings easily, be less susceptible to feedback, relatively un-invasive (mounts to fingerboard edge), and plug-n-play ( he doesn't want to mess with outboard DI).

I've installed several of these style pickups, and I'm concerned the tone is going to be too bassy for his liking. Not a big deal to switch it out for a new one, except that I would need to drill a small hole for the lead into the top, a bit more of a commitment.

Given his criteria, is there a better choice out there in an active pu? He does also want volume and tone control. Any suggestions?

It should be fine to use a jazz mini humbucker if your customer likes the tone. There are other surface mount pickups with low profiles available if you don't mind screwing them to the top. A jazzmaster pickup might fit under there too, as they are pretty thin.

I did a t.v.Jones humbucker on a round neck reso with a Fishman Jerry Douglas bridge pickup. The customer wanted separate jacks and mixed them outboard.

It sounded cool. It's at 2:38 in this video.
