Can you explain the difference in price for this item between these two vendors? The difference is quite huge...

Lowe's has a lower overhead cost per unit sold...Lowe's most likely sells a heck of a lot more of them and may very well be getting a lower wholesale cost because of the volume they move...

also, Lowe's whole part of the market (competing with Hell Depot) is based upon lower profit per item which is made up by sheer volume...and a side effect of competition with Hell Depot means lower prices for the consumers...

Handy little protractor, but I've also seen them being sold for over $20.

Lowes is $8.98 and Woodcraft is $20.99. I understand the difference based on volume pricing, but I didn't expect it to be that different. That sure makes things tough for Woodcraft. Ordinarily, I would buy from Woodcraft to support them even if the item is a little bit more - but jeeze...

We struggle with our string prices having evolved from believing that we could piss off clients if we charge more than say Gu*tar C*nter.... to where we are now and that is understanding that we provide a valuable service and are basically a very small business without the advantages of "lean manufacturing", electronic commerce, or computerized logistics with vender managed inventory....

Anyway these days we charge a fair price but it's more than other places but then again we don't sell anything but strings and we do that reluctantly as a service. No one wants to have to stop wrestling with a steaming neck being reset to sell a $6 string pack....

But in this case the price difference is WAY too much and would leave me feeling like I was getting ripped off...

I used to work directly for a fairly famous guy who was well known to say be number one or number two in all that you do or do something else.... If Woodcraft can't sell this item at even a remotely similar price to what they might charge across the street Woodcraft needs to sell something else....

Its a " Ohh yeah I need that too" item . People will buy it because they are buying something else and its handy and convenient .

I believe that Woodcraft stores are individually owned franchises. Consider talking to one of the sales persons or the owner if you are purchasing from a brick and mortar store, and asking if they could do a little better on the price. I have done this before at my local Woodcraft with good results. It helps if you are purchasing a few other things and/or you are known to be a good customer.

If you look at General's website you'll see that they sell 2 versions of the protractor. One in stainless steel and another more expensive version which is chrome plated. If you look at the add for the protractor on Woodcraft's website there is a link to a description of California's Prop 65. Click on that link and it mentions chromium. So maybe the protractor sold at Woodcraft is the more expensive chrome version even though it doesn't mention chrome plating in the protractor's description.

Woodcraft sells stuff u would never see in a big box store. Just don't buy stuff from woodcraft that you can buy just about anywhere

Woodcraft capitalizes on its image of being a woodworkers center. Virtually everything on a shelf there can be purchased cheaper somewhere else. But this is also true of many stores. I buy a lot of stuff there out of convenience but if it's a high ticket item I always shop around. It it's something I use a lot of (sandpaper, lacquer...wood...lol) I find a distributor or I order it.

I don't know about this particular instance, but I have found many cases where the big box stores have what appears to be the same exact item you can find elsewhere, but it really isn't. The packaging looks the same, but the actual product is made of inferior materials. Get big enough and manufacturers will make special runs for you.

You can also find overpriced stuff in the big box stores. And some of the stuff is inferior quality, as George mentioned.

Stainless steel normally contains 15% to 20% chromium.

Yes, but Neutron Jack wasn't quite operating as a one-industry guy like Woodcraft is.

I am acquainted with some folks who are pretty high up in the Woodcraft corporate ladder, and they typically do all that they can to keep their prices as competitive as possible without going belly-up.
