Found an old Koa Ukelele at a fleamarket, which has a couple of cracks on the top and back which are separated quite a bit. Afraid if I glue with hot hide glue and clamp, I'll break it. Not possible to join the cracks with hand pressure. Any ideas? Thanks.

They look very open, at least one of them does. Try to get some Koa and make some splints. It's the only way you are going to close those gaps.

I would first try to remove the bridge and humidify the heck out of it to see if they will close. I usually build some cauls by using the lower bout shape of the guitar to draw the shape to some cardboard then use that as a template to cut out some blocks on the bandsaw and line them with cork. Then you can use long bar clamps in an attempt to help close huge cracks liek that. After that splinting is the only option.

this I agree will be best served with a fillet.

Corky I'm a flea marketer. How much did you get it for? If I may ask?

You might be able to close up a couple of the tighter ones by humidifiying and gluing, but the largest one should have a splint.

Thanks all for the recommendations. Looks like "a splinting I will go".

Lonnie - It was marked at 8 bucks - we got it for 5. A find, for sure.

Wow you lucky dog. I run across good finds occasionally. Man that's going to be fun.

I don't think that humidification will help in this case. If you take notice the cracks are below the bridge and the top appears ok in front. The top did shrink behind the bridge and this may have been because of the brace structure. you certainly can try but this appears to be an older uke. Once the crack like this you most likely need the fill piece.
