Post subject: | Forgot to put in the side markers... What Now? |
Of course now that I have applied z-poxy and a coat of shellac on my new neck, now I realized that I forgot to put in the side markers... Normally, those are put in slightly proud and then sanded flush. It may be tough to sand the side markers flush without removing the z-poxy and possibly causing a color change (zebra binding). Also, it would likey be tough to avoid the spanish cedar neck (next to the binding) and result in a difference in color with the rest of the neck where the z-poxy is removed. ...not to mention potential adhesion problems due to the shellac when I try to re-apply the z-poxy to match the color. So, I am trying to figure out what I should do... Do I - drill the holes for the side markers slightly recessed and then drop fill so that I don't have to sand flush? (this appears to be my best option.) - or go ahead and put the side markers in and try to sand them flush?, - or, don't install side markers at all...? (this might seem odd.) Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. Otherwise this is (was) turning out to be nice build... |

After listening to you solutions I feel certain you'll end up well. I like the recessed idea. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I use the plastic sticks for side dot markers, drill the hole slightly under sized, bevel the end of the marker stick, tap into place, then cut it flush with a razor blade (no sanding involved). If done carefully, you should have no problems with color differences. |

Never use them, don't see a need for them. Without glasses I could not see them. |

I've drilled holes and then filled them with kampel's seamfil to make marker dots. It cleans up with a little bit of lacquer thinner on a rag. You might lose some of the shellac, but the z-poxy should be fine. http://www.kampelent.com/seamfil.php |

plus 1 on Tim's suggestion. I often use the plastic sticks (black or white). Drill, tap them in then cut flush with a razor blade. |

I responded a little while ago but for some reason it didn't post... Tim, that is a great idea! I usually use mother of pearl side dots, but the plastic rods would save me a lot of work. The black dot would work well with the zebra binding I'm using this time on the fingerboard. |

I've got some at the shop you can have if you don't want to make the investment and want to make the drive up. |
