Just finished my second guitar, another scratch build. I resawed all the ziricote for the back, sides, back strap, peghead veneer, fretboard, rosette, and bridge from the same billets. I also resawed the maple and padauk for the bindings/perflings, mahogany for the neck and blocks (from thick door lumber), etc.. The fretboard and peghead veneer are bookmatched. It has dual pickups (mic and piezo) needed by the owner. No CNC computer was used. The finish was all hand done (no spray or buffer).

Nice work, Ed. What finish are you using?

Nicely done!
I like how you have sourced most of your tonewood from billets and reclaimed wood.
I could see how ziricote would make for an excellent fretboard - that stuff is beautiful - and tough!
Excellent design for the sound port as well....
Also wondering about what you used for a finish - looks great!

Great looking guitar! Very nice work in the details: bindings, purflings, rosette and head stock shape. I love the way it all comes together.

I thank you guys very much for the encouragement.

Ken and Robbie,
The finish comes from Shellac Finishes out of San Diego. It is shellac with both natural and artificial resins added to make it harder (chemically link the chains) and also resistent to water, alcohol, etc. It takes about a month to cure. It's brand name is Royal Lac. You can see Vijay's (the owner, who is very helpful) video's on YouTube. I first pore-filled with Zpoxy (except top) and then padded on sealer coats of Seal Lac and then padded on Royal Lac on the whole guitar. The new owner said he has never seen a finish look so deep - yet it is very thin and not overly hard to do.

Robbie,
I worked for a good while to settle on my sound port shape and size. Everyone who sees it, guitar player or not, makes a postitive comment about it's looks. Thank you for your compliment. I did a toot a while back on how I did it.

John,
I worked for a good while to settle on my head stock shape too. While it is not altogether "new", it is not a copy of any one. I new that I wanted a classic "S" shape of the volute into headstock shape for the rear back strap. I was pleased with the way it worked out. All hand done for the volute.

Excellent guitar, Ed. I was just going to ask about the finish when your response popped up. Robbie Obrien demonstrated Royal Lac in one of his videos recently. It looked like a great product there, but seeing your outcome really impresses me about the stuff--and your ability to apply it!

Hi, Ed! Outstanding work! I wish it could have been done in time for Tacoma. That binding job would have been a treat to see in person.

Jason,
Thanks for the comment. The guitar finish was curing when I was in Tacoma for the GAL Conference in July. I had some pictures of it there, which was before I level sanded and polished it.

I think the bindings look better in person than in the pictures. I threw the padauk binding idea out with the thick maple perfling as a bold option to the owner and he loved it - so we went with it. I know that usually the maple perfling would be much thinner, but he wanted a bold look - which also included the wide ziricote segmeneted rosette with the white maple lines to completely frame each segments.

I really like the wide maple purfling - and thanks to tony for pointing out the matching top purfling on the fretboard.
This all is really pleasing to the eye; I am sure the tone and playability are up to the same standard.
Many thanks for sharing!

Second Guitar?? Holy Crap do I have a lot to learn before I finish my first!!! The entire guitar is stunning, but especially the edge work, both on the body and neck bindings/purfling.
