Post subject:  Neck angle jig for solid body, router or drum sander?

I have been out of practice for awhile and am just getting back into building. I have been working on a solid body electric for a friend of mine and I am getting ready to set the neck angle. I have done this several ways in the past but just wanted to get some opinions and ideas since it always seems to be frustrating for me. I have previously set the angle on the neck heel itself using a disc sander jig but that is a bit tricky. I have also used a jig on a thickness sander to put the 4 degree angle on the upper bout of the body. I have seen some use the same sort of jig with a router. Which jig/method do you guys prefer and if you have any pics of jigs and processes please share. Thanks, and look forward to replies.

Hi Aaron,

I used to do stuff with a myriad of jigs, and still had things not fit properly .. until I saw the Myka neck jig .. check it out in the tutorials page, or just on you tube .. it will solve all your issues - angled tapered pockets, tight fitting - no problem !!!!

To cut the neck pocket at an angle, i make a template with a slot in it sized for the width of the end of the neck that will be in the pocket.
I place the template on the body and use shims to set the angle I want and cut it out with a router and pattern bit. This way, the end of the neck sits flush against the pocket. I cannot advise on beveling the body top: never tried it.

The Myka jig also allows you to bevel the body at the neck end to whatever angle as well .. we just did that on one of my students les paul builds ...used to do that with a plane, and it took hours .. this did it perfectly in about 20 minutes .. unless you have a CNC, I cant see a better way to do this - sets up easily, and no shims to get the angle, as the table which holds the body tilts (OK, I do have riser shims to set the table, but they are huge in size and clamp under the table .. itsome folks build a locking mechanism to hold the table at whatever angle, these were easy to make in the thickness sander.
