Does anyone know if the alcohol used in french polishing can dissolve the yellow glue used to glue bindings?

Hi Dennis,

Consider doing an experiment. Good luck.

I use 190 proof ethanol for FP and never had a problem with it dissolving Titebond original, LMI white or HHG. Not sure about the various mixes of denatured alcohol out there. Can you describe what you mean by glue voids?

Joe

Edit: I guess I should have clarified that I never had an instance where the alcohol dissolved cured glue on the instrument. After reading Joe Beaver's response I think I understand the problem.

If you are trying to remove the glue in voids I would say French polish alcohol is not going to do it for you. That's assuming the yellow glue is cured.

vinegar will soften yellow glue. Use stainless steel or plastic implements if you need to pry things apart. Regular steel will leave a black stain when it comes in contact with vinegar.
