Post subject:  Bandsaw blade thoughts
I have a Jet 18" saw, 137" blades. I have only used Resaw King blades (and other Laguna). I need a good one for cutting neck blanks (hog). What would you suggest?

try a 3/8 6 tooth. That is my go to blade for most rough work

We make all the necks used in our KMG kits laminates and Mahogany -- thus lots of blanks. I am sure there are loads of blades that would suit yours and our needs. Our current choice is the Olson "All Pro" 1/4" 6 tpi -- the 1/4" makes cutting the tight heel curve easier while the 6 tpi leave a little smoother surface. I generally like to sand rather than plane the head stock -- this eliminate a chance of getting a deep chip out.

Mike we use the 1/4" 6 tooth from Grizzly.

1/4in 6 tpi delta for 2 bs and 1 /2in 6tpi morse recommended by my machinest. for another BS resawing into smaller veneers, with minimum sanding..

Catalog number?

The only one they have close is 140". I always had mine custom cut at laguna. But I'd rather not if I can save dollars and use a 140. My spec says 137. can I use a 140?

Well, I decided to bandsaw blades.com a try. Their shipping was high, but I do like my blades sized correctly

Yeah, I figured you must be using Grizzly machines. Too bad Grizzly doesn't offer custom baldes.

The Lenox carbon steel or the bi-metal which lasts longer are both good choices

I bought a couple of blades from bandsawbladesdirect.com, finally got around to cutting with one. 1/4", 6tpi.

It cut like crap. In pine none the less! Burned the wood. So I called them yesterday to whine. They told me the blade could be cutting in the wrong direction. Honestly, never thought about that before. Or even thought it was possible. They told me sometimes they weld them backwards. But did not tell me what to do about it. So I called Tim Lory at Laguna and he suggested that I turn it inside out. Again, that would not have occured to me. duh

Guess I'll be OK now.

Yup. It was on backwards. Turned it inside out and it's cutting like it should. How freaking funny. I had no concept this could happen.

Yea, check the direction of the blade before installing it, because running the blade backward will kill it very quickly.

I like M42 Bi-metal blades we use at work :) really last well, we use a 1/2" 3tpi for everything from 1/8" acrylic up to re-sawing other blades might be better for your job but I'd never go back to ordinary carbon blades now if a bi-metal one was available.

This is how airplane safety check lists grow. By experience. I have a friend who added "make sure you can see the nose gear tow bar leaning up against the barn door". Bet ya'll can guess how that one got added to the list... :)

Agreed on bi-metal -- they last forever with wood, so you don't need to think about if it's sharp.

If you need to cut steel (even stainless), use an old blade turned backwards, set the saw on "very fast" then put on some ear plugs.
