We have a few sets of some incredible Padauk that I thought some of you might be interested in. Figured Padauk like this doesn't come around too often. Only 4 sets left. http://rctonewoods.com/RCT_Store/padauk-c-1_51/ Attachment: cur_pad_0423_005.jpg Attachment: cur_pad_0423_005_a.jpg Attachment: cur_pad_0426_002.jpg Attachment: cur_pad_0426_002_a.jpg

So.... I'm reading that padauk will darken with age probably due to UV degredation. I'm seeing images that show it can get to almost black in color. Any idea how long that process takes? Anyone with images of old(er) figured padauk?? |

About a year ago some guy brought me a strat that I made almost 15 years ago out of Padauk, finished it in Tung Oil and wood wax. It was still bergundy colored. |

I just thought of another one I made about ten years ago that I finished in Tru-Oil, I recently saw it. It was still vibrant reddish orange. I guess it depends on how it's finished? |

From what i'm reading, some finishes have built in UV Inhibitors that delay the change but most agree that it will change. |

Oh it's changed, but not dramatically. All wood changes, not just padouk. |

Most woods are ultraviolet sensitive, however, the Padauk is highly UV sensitive. Just put a piece of it out in the sun with a stick laying across the face of it and wait about 10 minutes you'll find this out. The best way to keep the color is to keep it out of the sun and light. Talked away in a guitar case when not playing his best. You can add UV filters to any finish if it doesn't already have it in it also. |

One suggestion i found was to play only in a vault with no lights. ![]() I'm just curious as to how dark it could get. One photo i found had an electric neck that was as brown as dark chocolate. It's tough not knowing how dark it started. * Making a mental note to reply here in 20 years with updated photos (Or borg-ish cloud/mind melds depending on the technology) |

Nice figure, never seen this in padouk before. I have a acoustic bass guitar I built about 12 years ago, and I can provide pictures of the colour of the wood now. really dark brown, but nice! Will try to take a picture tomorrow. cheers, alex |

I left a piece out in my back porch for a year once, it turned brown as oak by then. That was outside in direct sunlight. |

That ebay one has enough figure to make up for the flaws though, I think. |
