Post subject:  Shooting board with straight edge attachment?

Has anyone built a shooting board that has a straightedge for the plane sole to ride against?
Seems like this could take away some of the annoyance of shooting panels, having the cuts either be convex or concave. Though I suppose it could erode the plane sole after enough use...

Yes common among cabinet makers and usually used for trimming endgrain. Have a look on YouTube for shooting boards.

i used to use a straight edge. it started to wear a groove into the cast iron sole of my plane. i stopped using it though because no matter how hard i tried, there was always a bit of ramping out on the woods edges that the straight edge didn't give me wiggle room to deal with. a bit constraining imo.

Google David Charlesworth, I believe he has pdf plans for a shooting board.
Maybe on the Lie Nielsen site

Arie,

I would have that that having a straightedge would make ramping out impossible, in fact that would be the point...

I got a pretty badass shooting boards, as for chops to use it...sometimes yes, sometimes no. Spruce is easy, flamed walnut, not so much...

true, but there's always some compression of the wood when you enter the cut, and a bit of rebound when you exit.

You might check the design by Tico Vogt- http://www.vogttoolworks.com/ it would have to be lengthened for guitar work, but the idea is great according to the reviews, and may solve the problem.
