I bought this on the Bay last night, and it turns out the guy lived down the street for me. It is in excellent condition for being 75 years old, and should make joining tops and backs a dream from now on!!!

You won't regret that purchase. I just used mine a couple of days ago to true up the edge of my fretboard for the bindings. You will probably find uses for it that you never thought you needed before. I am not sure how you join plates but it works really well as a weight to keep the parts flat when you glue them together. Congrats! It's in fine shape. Looks just like mine except for the Stanley stamp on the lever cap. My iron is stamped with "Stanley Rule and Level". Those totes on the old ones are Brazilian. |

Mine isn't either, but not sure that is important. If you book your halves, the joint works. If it is important for you to have a 90 degree joint instead of an 89 degree or so, have it milled flat and square on one side. |

Square edge to the blade. Might even be the original. Get the blade super sharp, make sure the chipbreaker fits well and off you go. I wouldn't bother fitting an after market blade either, providing that one is fine. |

I spent $85-90 on Hock iron/chipbreaker combo for a Stanley 4 1/2. It works great but then I sharpened the original iron and got the original chipbreaker fettled. I put the original iron/chipbreaker back in and it works the same. Just make sure to get the chipbreaker setup correctly (tip honed at 70-75 degrees and set VERY close to the iron's edge). I hope you asked the eBay seller if he has any more tools for sale. Sounds like a good guy to get to know. |

I think I have a at least a few dozen blades - some old, some new, some expensive, some cheap. Virtually all of them are good enough to use in a professional capacity on a day to day basis. I have a few that seem to stand out just a touch from the rest - an old Stanley Rule and level from a 102 block plane, an old Sheffield blade in a woody and an old Acorn blade. I've also been impressed with the blades in those little wooden Chinese Planes. The rest are fine, including the original thin blade in my '70's Stanley 5 1/2. The plane actually works very good, despite it being from an era when Stanley Planes were rapidly going down in quality. |

My plains are Baily but essentially the same thing. I think the difference is the Baily has adjustment screws for the frog. Even though it is is really good shape I would do a couple of things when you tune it up. I would lap the top of the frog to be sure it was dead flat as well asthe back of the iron. Those need to mate perfectly or you could get chatter or it could be harder to adjust while you are using it. The other thing is to file the mouth to the exact same angle as the frog and make sure it is square to the plane. Those few things will make it rock solid when plaining and you will not get any chatter. The Cap iron also needs to mate up with the iron perfectly or you will get shavings jambing up between them. Put the Cap Iron and the Iron together but don't bolt them tight. Hold it up to a light so you can see where they touch. There shouldn't be any gaps between the two. As for the iron, you will probably be just fine if it is a Stanly. I bought a Stanly SW blade for mine but I also have a bunch of standard Stanly irons and the only difference is my SW iron stays sharp longer. It may get a bit sharper then the standard ones but for price vs performance the standard ones are just fine. Cheers, Bob |

Meddling: The side does not have to be 90 degrees to the sole. Just shoot one side show face up and the other side inside face up and any mismatch from 90 degrees cancels out. Tom |

This one came with a blade that's basically unused and in great condition. I'll stick with the original steel on this one.
