Post subject:  1st Build - Rosette Design & Progress Photos

I recently began my 1st build which is an OM style guitar. Despite some early minor setbacks things are progressing nicely.

Earlier in the week I designed what I wanted to do for my rosette. I planned to rout a 3/8" solid wood ring out of left over rosewood. I joined the rosewood pieces and sanded them down to .50. I routed the 3/8" channel in my soundboard and glued the wood ring in place and then sanded flush.

I plan on routing another 3/64" wide channel on the outside and inside of the solid wood ring and place BWB purfling. Once that is complete I'm going to rout another channel in the center of the rosewood ring and inlay a ring of paua abalone.

Rosette design with dimensions (1st ring is the sound hole for reference):

More to follow as I add the purfling and abalone...

Very well done. Neat and organized. Something I still have trouble with after all these years.
Can't wait to see more.

Nice clean routes.
That is definitely the way to go about it; set in the feature wood first then rout for the purfling rings.
Great progress!

Sneak peak at what it will look like with the back installed. Still need to install the bracing later this week.

Wow! Not bad for a first rosette. I just finished my first build and the rosette came out horrible. I tried to do something similar but ended up making a set of rosewood coasters before I got a rosewood ring that didn't break into 3 pieces. Once I was done the idea of putting in abalone went right out the window. Now I know what to do for the next time.

If you want to make the abalone pieces a little more flush to the surface you can glue some thin wood veneers to the backs of them..

Out of the mold just to see how things look. All of the back and top bracing has been cut and planed. Going to work on the x-bracing for the top this weekend. Image

I'm sure you're doing this, but are you planning to put struts on the inside of the sides?
Very nice rosette and looks like your work is very precise and clean! Love it :)
