My Latest Creation. Please go to my website home page to listen to the sound. http://www.ateliertomistrings.com. Note: please use Mozilla Firefox browser to hear sound clip. Finally, got around to finishing this new uke. It/s tuned to a high d like a 4 string gtr DGBE. The top is WRC , back an sides tamarind. Neck is silver maple . FB is pernambuco laminated with persimmon veneer and black locust the yellow/cream coloured wood . The tuners are grover gtr minis.Bridge is pernam. The top bracing pattern comes from the may 2012 anzlf forum. I used laminated h/ mahog with carbon fiber bracing. The tamarind back abt .065-.070 has the live radial back a la gore/gilet using eng spruce. The nut is desert ironwood and the saddle is m. ebony. Finish is antique rosewood oil stains shellac and thinned cabinetmakers varnish 3 coats. The back has an added carving of boxwood strip with a flower/vine motif not shown. I really like the sound., and am a novice uke player . No wild or exotic animals were harmed in the making of this uke . Thanks |

Thanks peter , No I never did document the bracing or any steps at all. I just got an android fone , and learning to use it .I am basically a bozo when it comes to computers. I took the back bracing from the gore/gilet book 2 , 6mm by 20mm eng spruce on the back and then the radials at the bottom of the back. The top bracing came from the threads on the ANZLF may 2012 forum on falcate bracing for ukes .There are a number of great ideas posted by the Oz uke builders .The one I used was a concert design with 2 laminated h. mahog/carbon fiber bracing and 2 longer curved braces running from the UTB past the bridge plate. No hype, the sound is amazing , and has renewed my faith in building and the falcate design and the ideas in the gore/gilet book .I/m a convert. PS , I have also built abt 6 welsh stick chairs from the book by Brown. I used a simple jig of 2by 8 pine and laid out my c and falcate braces using penny nails or finishing nails and clamping with spring clamps as in the gore book. Hope this helps. |

Nice work Ernie. I felt that the falcate braced guitar I made was much more responsive than other guitars I was used too. What's your feeling on the uke? |

Steve I .made a similiar pineapple tenor, no contest . I have been playing music for 60 years.Falcate wins hands down . It has a warmth/ resonance and reponse that the conventional uke does not seem to have . Which begs the next question. Why build in the conventional manner ?planning on doing the same with 2 CL and SS gtrs. |

Ernie: Nice work! That sounds bright for cedar-soundboard. Do you think that the laminated bracing is worth the effort? I have found that falcate bracing works well for tenor ukuleles, I am on my fourth and fifth at present. I am not certain what differences in sound there are between the conventional shape and the pineapple. My present builds are pineapple- pancakes (1 1/2" deep) from maple-spruce and from Honduran mahogany. I hope to post both before January. Bob

Hi bob and greetings to you in GWN or winterpeg.YES, yes and yes. For a more conventional sound whatever that means, I like yellow cedar top with a local wood, buttonwood, american sycamore. Don/t know if it/s available in Manitoba. but probably in minneapolis.It soaks up finish, 1/4 sawn, inexpensive and makes good sounding gtrs and ukes etc. I used laminated h. mahog which I think you suggested ,the ANZLF guys used spruce. I have several more falcate braced ukes in progress as well as finishing a conventional 6 string tenor and pineapple conventional 8string tenor. My pineapple is abt 60-62mm overall currently using tamarind readily available .But will also be using santos mahogany, carribeanwalnut(koa) jatoba tamarind and others. The tamarind is vy similiar in density to indian rosewood, so that could be the reason it sounds so bright . My wrc is recycled from shakes on our neighbours 20 yr old roof. lol. I have yet to use Maple, but have made some from spruce.Guessing your using manitoba maple. If interested there is a good uke website ukulelel underground. |
