Judging by the small pores, Indian. Love that purple :) Does it smell a bit like tar? I have a purple set that does.

So, you don't know what it is, or is this a test?

Not sure what it is, but I can never get that nice a finish with my lawn mower. :)

What about the smell? You know what EIR & Bois de Rose smell like.

Boise De Rose for sure. I've been staring at the stuff for weeks. I hope it wouldn't have been big enough for B&S sets before you cut it up!

60x2x13" ought to get at least 4 back and side sets, maybe 8. But judging by that endgrain shot, it's highly unlikely that a bois de rose tree would have been that large of diameter. If it was, it would be worth a fortune.

I still say the pores are too small. Indian is the only rosewood with pores like that, and it does come in purple occasionally. But large forest grown Indian boards are rare too, because of the "finished product" export restriction. I'd love to get a harp guitar set from it.

What's the density? Bois de rose and Indian are pretty close though, so it won't be a good way to differentiate between them.

And I still want to know what it smells like. Bois de rose is like honey and roses, almost better than Brazilian. Indian is highly variable and usually not as good. Sometimes it smells fairly floral, but usually with a bit of elephant dung mixed in. And as I said before, the purple set I have smells like tar.

Well he said he got it from an estate sale and so chances are its super old. So it's possible that it could be Boise de Rose. It's beautiful whatever it is.

I dug into my stash & found some of each. They were sitting on top of each other so the Bois de Rose smelled like EIR, sort of ironic.

Anyhow, here are pics of each.

I say it's EIR because of the pores.
