I know Tonerites are a dubious for some people, but I believe I've heard results from using it on several of my guitars. I was curious if any luthiers have used it on a soundboard for a period of time while they were working on other areas of the guitar (i.e.; neck, etc). Was there any discernible benefit?

The principle we talking here is Induction. ~ That of inducing the wood to respond in a supposedly more desirable fashion by vibrating it for a period of time. Yep us westerners just love gadgets that plug in, suck up electricity or run on batteries and do things for us.

Now the principle of Induction been around a long time in the ancient mystical mumbo jumbo schools of India, the middle east and Mediterranean...in fact nearly all the "primitive societies" on the planet are familiar with this principle.

Now me kinda "Mr. Natural" guy and so no, you won't be finding me laying down $ on a piece of vibrating junk... as me much prefer to induce the desired qualities of the instrument directly into all the pieces of the wood while in the various processes of fabrication by entering into communion with the wood in my thoughts and heart thereby transmitting and inducing the desired qualities in the build via the technique known as chanting. Yup, vibration without batteries. laughing6-hehe

However me do suggest you do whatever you be inclined to do when building that sucker.

Ps: Steven... to answer your 2 questions directly...
1, yes and
2. minimal.

If the tonerite does anything to a finished guitar, it is probably helping the wood warp to relieve stresses caused when the guitar was glued together. If the wood is well aged and a quality guitar wood it should have a free relaxed ring all by itself and not need any stress relieved.
I'm a believer in taking new guitars, putting them in front of a big speaker and playing ferociously loud music at them. Sound vibrations of real music seems to me more to the point than what the tonerite is doing.

Ya sometimes me strap them to the Leslie, kick over the Hammond and throw down some shout at em. Tends to smarten em up real fast. laughing6-hehe

Use the belt and suspenders approach, bake it and use the Tone-Rite (but not at the same time).

I do put the device on my new builds for three or four days when first strung up followed by the final setup. Kind of a "pre shrink" I think the initial setup may stick a little longer. Totally unscientific though, no hard data yet.

Terrence, did you really mean "bake"?

I use a highly sophisticated electical device that has been adapted to do the same thing as the 'Tonerite' on new instruments, I believe it helps them play in a little faster (its a $3 aquarium pump ;) ), . And if not, it doesn't seem to hurt much, and it makes for some interesting comments from visitors and on the social media. I have no idea if it would make any difference on parts and raw wood, how would you know, anyways?

Well this vibrate it before hand reminds me of the plates me once upon a time carved from a 50 year old lutz bridge stringer only driven over by logging trucks . Like that wood was vibrated more than a porn stars dildo.

Was a nice build.

Did it has any difference?

Me has to agree with you Arnt. How wood me know?...but then the ol ?adma, him don't be known much bout nuthin anyhow. laughing6-hehe

You could put a soundboard on your dashboard all summer and it would be like baking and toneriting all in one. Not to mention a conversation starter for picking up chicks.

I use an aquarium air pump too...

I'm from the school of thought that believes playing in is a function of stress relaxation(aka cold creep) of high localized stresses induced mostly during the building process, so I don't think treating before construction would do anything.
That's my best guess, with emphises on guess.

bliss Interesting terminology - "break in". Soundboards crack to relieve stresses. Perhaps we should precrack them before assembly. bliss
