Hello all -- I'm getting ready to make templates and molds for a fanned fret baritone, and thought I'd put up my bracing scheme for some constructive feedback, in case I'm way off track anywhere. The fan aspect seems to necessitate rotating the whole structure a little, hence the off-center X (by about an eighth) and fanned transverse and popsicle braces. Thanks for looking! Ken |

Looks fine to me... the most important thing IMO is making sure the wings of the bridge cross over the main X. I'm not sure you need to rotate the upper transverse braces though... it seems to me they should be perpendicular to the neck to give consistent support against the heel, but as a practical matter as long as everything's beefy enough there it's probably not a concern. |

I see why you had to rotate the upper transverse braces. I agree with James. As long as they are beefy enough it should be no problem |

Why is the x-brace off centre? |

Rod -- I wound up putting the X off-center after trying lots of configurations, and it's the best compromise I came up with considering the X's relationship to the soundhole, transverse brace, and where they let into the sides, and most importantly, where they catch the wings of the bridge. Do you think that 1/8" off-center is problematic? Ken Jones Mountain Song Guitars |

Looks a lot like the way mine ended up. I think mine was a bit further off center. No problems so far. |

The X will be off centre depending on how much fan you use, and your bridge design - I place the X on my multiscales after I place the bridge and soundhole, and really dont care all that much how off centre they are - yours looks almost symetrical compared to some of mine from the past - this will work just fine. |

Awesome, thanks, Mike and Tony for the reassurance. Any thoughts on the angled transverse/popscicle brace? Ken Jones Mountain Song Guitars |

Angled UTB is fine too .. I do that on most of my multis. Rod .. depending on what scales and where you put the straight reference fret (could even be the nut - I do that on my harps), the patterns will all be somewhat different - I have a bunch of patterns I created for each different setup as required. When you are ready to go , let me know and I can guide you thru creating a pattern. |
