...you ensure your vehicles have a tape measure in the glove boxes at all times just in case you come across some interesting stock at the lumber yard.

When going hiking out in the beautiful forests of the Smoky Mountains, you wonder how the grain is in that huge Maple tree off the path over there...

Straining your eyes trying to count growth rings on a popsicle stick, and then doing a deflection test on it.

You see an interesting chunk of wood on the ground at the park, and still remember exactly where it is a year later when you come up with a use for it http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=518385#p518385

You check out the "thrift stores" in Honolulu looking for solid koa furniture that you can disassemble and ship home for your stash.

If you can't decide if you want to restore that old mahogany table that your grandmother left you...............or build a guitar with the wood.

The guitar sounds great.:>)

You go outside after a storm looking for fallen trees for potential guitars...

You walk across the street and check out the pine tree next to the swimming pool and collect over 1 qt worth of resin for homemade resin varnish.

You plant Dalbergia Niagra in your backyard as "investment".

You find yourself staring at the lumber at Lowes to see if any of it is quarter sawn.

or.....

You have more than 1 donut spare tire on your car, but you are headed to the lumber yard to check out their stash.

Actually, those they have at most lumber yards. Instead, you keep a well sharpened block plane in your glove box so you can check the grain orientation of sealed lumber.

Filippo is right - those that are luthiers or hacks should have the measurements memorized and be able to measure with their fingers or arm lengths. a few lose hairs laid side to side are good for those really precise measurements

you look at the 1 3/4 inch thick door to your state senators office in the state capital building and wonder how many guitars you could build with that 140 year old mahogany?

I just kept it on the back seat. Or in the trunk. Or on the floor somewhere.

I used to buy a lot of wood...
