I am really burning through these things quickly... any line you add to your guitar to accent things uses up one strip that costs around 2 dollars. Doesn't seem like much but when you're using 8 or more of them on one guitar (2 for the top, 2 for the back, 4 for the binding, and a few extra for rosettes, end grafts, etc.) it really adds up. I notice this fiber stuff tears and separates easily... in fact it often comes in with partial delamination and it really looks like paper...

so my question is, has anyone used thick cardstock paper as purfling strips?

Stop using fiber and use wood veneers. So much easier to work with. Easy to make too.

#7 or 8 plane, steam iron, some clamps and make your own, just as all the good old luthiers use to do once upon a time long ago in our distant future, before they pulled the switch and the lights went out.

Think about it ~ take all the time you need.

I was experimenting around these lines recently and got some of the black and white fiber sheets from lmi. comes in various thicknesses and was pretty easy to cut up into strips. and somewhat cheaper than the pre laminated strips.

Are these ebay ones the fine line purfling or the bold one? The description says shipping only to US or Australia...

I'm from Canada, asked for a shipping quote and was off to the races.

I made these from ziricote and maple, and saved the 22 cents(you forgot the shipping costs)- not too bad for my first time.
I will invest the 22 cents in the futures markets.

The cost or purfling has nearly driven me out of the guitar building business. laughing6-hehe

Seriously though, if you are curious about card stock working as purfling try it out. I am sure it will work OK.
Other types of stock will not work as purfling. Here are some examples:
beef stock
shares of stock
chicken stock
stockings
vegetable stock
Todd Stock

And when you've exceeded your limit of purfling frustration there is always gun stock.

Why you gotta be a stock block Tony?

Because as a child, I loved soup, and my mother never let me eat any. I guess all of that stock blocking in my formative years, led me to be a stock blocker when I grew up.

Gun stock is out for me, like most countries you can't own a gun in Taiwan unless you are in a very select group of vetted individuals. Although most Taiwanese will learn to use a gun at some time during their lifetime because of mandatory military conscription.

As for making my own purfling, I have enough rosewood and maple veneers to last a lifetime, but when I try to make purflings out of them I encounter several problems:

1. The lay up process seems difficult... when I try to join two narrower veneers together there's always a gap between them, and the veneers do not lay flat.
2. When it comes time to cut them I use a bandsaw, but no matter what the edge is jagged and the width is inconsistent.
3. They do not bend very well at all, in fact if I try to force them into a curved body they respond by breaking. Fiber purflings are flexible enough that I don't need to heat bend them at all.
4. The purfling also doesn't look very sharp at all, and due to their rigidness I had issue of flat spots on the guitar body as well as inconsistent lines.

Says shipping is "only $10" to UK,US, etc.
If you check the shipping options you will find they will ship to Taiwan, but you would have to check with the seller for shipping options.
Do you need me to check with the seller for you?
I can check if they are fine or bold at the same time, but as the size is quoted as - Measures 2.5mm x 1.3mm thick and 970mm long it is between the SM sizes at 1.02 mm and 1.52mm, perhaps it could be described as "medium"?
At the same time I can check for the part number for the bearing size you need (you are using the SM cutter as I recall - please confirm) if you tell me the binding size you will be using.

Post subject:  Re: cheap bwb fiber purfling strips?

I just ordered some bwb and herringbone purfling as well as some kerfed lining. Will see how good they are or "you get what you pay for"...

I bought cheap rosettes before and they were junk. The rosette was so thin that you can sand through them if you're not careful. They are also translucent due to their thickness. For comparison Stewmac/LMI rosettes (I mean the 3 ring herringbone rosette for steel strings by the way) are at least twice as thick.

Just got my order in and it all seems to be of good quality. The white on the b/w looks like a maple veneer and not a white veneer.
