I finally broke down and built one for myself. It's a "mini dreadnought" shape that I've had good luck with so far. *25.4" scale length *cocobolo back and sides *sitka top & bracing *cocobolo rosette & binding *ebony fingerboard & bridge *honduran mahogany neck *the inlay is a drake bufflehead duck done in black and white mother of pearl *finish is EM6000 (about 24 coats) over 3 coats of EM1000 - total build was about .007" before wet sanding ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This one took awhile to build, 2 little kids = not much time in the shop! I think it sounds good...but well...it's my kid, and I don't criticize my own kids much (at least in public), ya know? I have to admit that although I love the look of ebony, it's not my favorite tonally. I'm more of a rosewood guy...next one will probably have a madagascar fingerboard & bridge, I love that stuff! Thanks for looking, Trev |

Lovely back! Lovely guitar in general. I always wonder (and need to know for my next build), do you inlay first and then cut the fret slots? |

Trevor, Beautiful guitar, and I LOVE the bufflehead inlay. I don't know specifically what it brings to your mind, but I am a duck man, too. It brings a lot of fond memories to my mind. Patrick |

Great looking guitar, Trevor! It looks like a comfortable size to sit down and play. I am now fond of ducks. Dan |

Thank you guys for the kind words! I build under the name "Peake Guitars", named for my proximity to the Chesapeake. I decided to do a bufflehead because A) they are beautiful little ducks that translate well to black and white mother of pearl B) they are all over the Chesapeake in the winter and C) I wanted to do a bird of some sort as a tip of the hat to PRS where I got started with this stuff. That cocobolo back is what convinced me that this one should be for me.. (c: Todd - that would be great to meet up with you guys. Grouse season is approaching and I hope to get out that way this fall.. Patrick - I'm more into upland birds & fly fishing, but my brother is a die hard waterfowler...so I've spent my share of time in a duck blind! The next one on the bench is a black walnut with WRC top, shouldn't be too much longer for that one Trev |

Looks awesome Trevor! The cocobolo is beautiful. The Chesapeake is indeed a beautiful area. My family has hunted the eastern shore of Maryland for years. They are falconers and I am sure the duck has been in the eye of their hawk or falcon in hand many a time. Given my background, I have used the silhouette of the redtailed hawk on my guitars. Love seeing the Chesapeake influence in your guitar. |

Really classy and beautiful! Our waterfowl hunting in WI is mostly Mallards...and I'd hate to try to get all THOSE colors inlaid in that small space. Your Buffle is really sweet. |

Nick, I apologize for the late reply...but I do inlay first and slot later. I stop all the inlays just short of the fret slot. I use a CNC for this type of work, so your process may vary.. Trev |

The reason for doing this is that you run the risk of cracking the inlay if you press a fret directly into shell. One thing you can do if you do not want to break the inlay into multiple pieces is that you can chamfer/widen the slot a bit right in the area where the shell is. With the CNC you can run *just* up to the slot. |

Parser wrote: The reason for doing this is that you run the risk of cracking the inlay if you press a fret directly into shell. That's what I was still unsure of, thanks for the clarification. I'm not sure which way I'll do it. It seems easier to widen them slightly after slotting but I'll draw it out and work out how much room I'd have to play with under the fret. I'm inlaying the letters R o s i e, with only the R crossing a fret (the 11th), so it shouldn't be too bad. Thanks again for the advice. Hope mine turns out half as well as yours! It will be a good while before I get to use CNC. |

I think it's like pretty much every other aspect of guitar building - go slow and get it right the first time..! (c: Post a few pics once you get it inlaid! |
