Post subject:  Should I expect this?

I ordered a first grade amazon rosewood fretboard from Allied Lutherie a few weeks ago, and tonight started working with it. It seemed nice on the sanded side, but after planing the other side I noticed that it was riddled with knots, voids, and irregularities. I decided to just slot it and see what happens, but after looking at it, I'm not sure if it's something I'd like to use on a guitar. Is this the quality (or lack of) I should expect from this grade? I've purchased 2nd quality fretboards from LMI that never had these issues, so I'm thinking it's just the suppliers grading system or something? What do you think?

That's not first grade. Certainly a mistake and LMI will make it right. They are a class act.

It came from allied. I've heard the same of them as well, I think I'll send them an email.

I'm no expert, but not only is that not first grade, it doesn't look like Amazon (D. spruceana) to me either.

I don't see ANY yellow fill in the pores, and the grain looks too coarse, compared to samples I have.

Perhaps a board of tucarensis or something slipped in the shipment rather than the Amazon.

Just guess :)

That was my thought as well. The pores and grain look like very much like tucurensis.

obviously the first step is to call allied. bringing it to a forum just kicks the bee hive imo. beehive that board doesn't look very good. i'd use it for rosette pieces.

That could be Amazon.

Did it smell bad when you slotted it? Amazon smells bad to me, very pungent, almost ammonia like.
