I strung this guitar last night and was finally able to play it. As always it sounded bad at first, but I set the action, and cleaned up the top of the saddle, allowed the string to stretch a bit so they could stay in tune at least part way through a tune and it sounds good.

This guitar has a red spruce top, African Blackwood back and sides with Tasmanian Blackwood bindings. The bridge is some sort of rosewood. The ebay seller called it Brazilian. In any case it was a nice looking piece of wood and when carved came in just above 25 grams. The bridge is a 12 hole.

I need to trim the saddle. The way it is now I can raise or lower the action a bit by sliding the saddle.

I still need to final polish the top, I am just waiting a few days to let the finish cure.

The whole guitar was French polished with blond shellac.

Congratulations! Very smart build. What are your plans for #12?

And how does the build process feel to you now compared to #1, #2, #3, etc?

Having just finished my second, I'm intrigued. Have you had "that" build that just "clicked"?
I'm just trying to see into the future! :)

Beautiful !
Keep up the great work!
12 or 18 holes is the way to go.

John,
VERY, VERY nicely done. I like the way you finished the back onto the heel. Guess I'll have to try 12 or 18 holes next time. The tonewood choices and the finish speak for themselves. [clap] [clap]

Nice work, John. Have you used Adirondack spruce before on a classical before?

Nice... I wish I can afford blackwood to experiment on... I will stick with EIR until I either win the lottery or when a customer commissions something else...

Thanks all for the positive encouragement. I plan to give the guitar to my classical guitar instructor from whom I have been taking lessons for the last 20 years.

This is the first time I used Adirondack spruce for a classical Using red spruce is outside of the norm but this wood had a density of 424kg/m3 right in Engelmann spruce territory and I could hear a real nice sustained ring from the plates before they were joined with the plate 3.5 mm thick. I just liked the way the plates sounded and wanted to give it a try.

I am not sure if my builds are clicking yet. Each guitar I make I try something new and try new ways to do things. A lot of the processes come easier as I have learned how to sharpen and use chisels and planes. Binding the guitar is still a challenge.

I am not sure which of the project I have in mind that I want to do next. I think I am going to start a 12 fret 00 to play with a bevel and make my first cutaway. I have a really nice Tasmanian Blackwood set and a real nice cedar top that I am considering using.

again, thank you all for your comments.

That sounds like a goer to me. I'd like to build it!

I bet. That's definitely something I need to focus on next time.

Cheers,

You could go on recording and call the album "The Beautiful Guitar"...

Lovely guitar, and it looks like a great set of African blackwood...
