It could probably be drop filled. You would need to know what was on it though and the cracks on the side may need to be opened up a bit to allow for penetration. Color matching could be an issue due to U.V. effects with original coating and timber. |

If it were lacquer it's big enough I would think about the airbrush. If it's a poly finish then break out the super glue..... |

Is there a way to determine what type of finish it is? It's my friends guitar and he doesn't know what's on it. |

Drop of acetone on the finish, in an area under pickguards or something. If the finish is unaffected then it's not lacquer. Color matching is a real issue... I can never make a guarantee for shade matching because unless you're really good (I'm not even sure if it's possible) there will always be a difference in shade... |

Who makes the guitar? If it's Martin, Gibson, or the like it's usually nitro. Lower to mid grade Yamaha, Epi, Washburn, Ibanez and the like made in Asia are usually polyester. Not always true, depending on model, but in general. |

I'll have to find out the brand but I know it's not one of the big 3. It's some brand I've never heard of. It's a solid wood guitar and very nice but I cannot for the life of me remember who made it. I'll try the acetone thing. He would be ok with the color being off a bit, his main concern it the exposed wood and the increased possibility of more damage with it the way it is. |
