One day me eyeballed an instrument on line with an adjustable (open ~ closing) sound hole...an iris type thing that would "tune" the main air mode....anybody know where-to-fore me speaking of, or where to find any info on this build or how to construct a wooden iris? Suggestions? Thank you! ![]() |

I can't believe I didn't ask Chris more about how this went to together when I had the chance. Perhaps he will pony up with some photos. |

Hey that thing looks familiar. Here is where I figured out how to build an aperture: http://www.artbypeterj.com/portfolio/content/camera_project/05.php Hope that helps. |

Chris, great idea. But would you say it was effective? It seems like quite a bit of work to make, would you say it was worth the effort? |

Joe, This thing was incredibly difficult to build. I was concerned with the weight from the get go and used as much spruce as possible for that reason. The aperture does affect the sound- but it is minimal at best and can really only be heard in a nice and quiet room. Having the aperture installed during the finish process was a huge pain. But there is no way to install it afterwards (at least with my design). Would I do it again? Not unless someone REALLY wanted to pay me some serious money to do so. It was more work than it was worth. |

There are a few people who have side ports with sliders for a better term. I think I have seen a few on here and maybe Grit Laskin did it too. I guess it could accomplish the same thing but it certainly doesn't look as cool as Chris Ensor idea. |
