I'm new to finishing my own work, and the forum has been a big help !. The guy that has done all my finishing before, used 3 smaller detail guns setup with the 3 different colors ready to go, in order to spray the burst in one round.

I'm inclined to buy the better guns rather than the cheap throw-aways (notorious leakers?)....so I'm wondering if it might be good to try the 3M PPS system , with a nice gun, just change the cups in succession, as I complete each color. Can this be done on the fly?...messy?.....good idea, not a good idea.? Would this work at all.

Looks like also the colors can store in the disposable cups for a time, with the caps

Then there's buying 3 guns.....one's I'm looking at are around $150-250. ea.

Also ...as it stands the system will be the Fuji Q-4 hvlp (so far).

ImageI have the PPS but have not used it yet. For this burst I used an Optima 800 gravity feed HVLP gun. I mixed my four colors in different mixing cups but only had one cup for the gun. A quick rinse with lacquer thinner between color changes was sufficient. This pic is before topcoats and buffing.

I have the PPS and have used it for several guitars. Easy to take off and run a little thinner to clean it out. As long as the solvent is the same I think it would work good for on the fly color changes. Be careful when you first start using them ... I still have a T shirt that has a nice splash of shellac across the front :)

Nice Burst Casey ! That's right...I would have to clean the gun between color changes. Solvent might not be the same. Good point.

Any knowledge of a good non leaking detail gun under or around $100.??

I am using a Devilbiss SRI pro with the Dekups interchangeable cup system. To change from sealer to toner to clear with one gun simply pull the interchangeable cup, run some thinner through and install the next cup already filled with what you need. The gun;

A burst done with it.

Very nice Burst Brian. I'll check that system out.

I see now Fuji has a 3 cup kit for changing colors or whatever...fits all Fuji guns. No disposable componant feature....just quick change and storage. Cheap too.

The three cup kit only works with the bottom feed XPC gun, not the XPC gravity gun. [headinwall]

The main reason, in my opinion, to get either the PPS or Dekups systems is that they contain a lot of the mess and make it really easy and fast to clean the gun.

also the way the bladder collapses means the material is fed through the gun no matter the position, even upside down. I also like the fact that there is a built in filter and the bladders act as a relatively air free storage container. I also like the idea of mixing material directly in the indexed bladder as opposed to getting a separate mixing cup dirty, something else you have to clean. To expand on what you said the big advantage is with a normal cup or siphon feed gun you have to clean the cup before you can run clean thinner through the gun which means a lot more thinner, a lot more voc's being sprayed out into the environment and a lot more cost on top of the time expended just trying to get a gun ready for the next round. With this thing you just need a clean bladder full of thinner and a rag for wiping down the exterior of the gun. I haven't gotten the dekups system for my compact siphon feed yet, but I'm going to.

The Fuji gravity adapter can be found on this page: http://www.hvlpsales.com/PPS.html

Good points John. For cleaning I use one of those laboratory squeeze bottles to squirt solvent directly into the gun. No cup needed.

The Fuji gravity gun cleans up well, but for folks that spray a lot of bursts in the same colors, I'm guessing there is likely a PPS adaptor. When I do bursts or tints, or even opaque colors, almost any of the gravity guns I own seem to clean up pretty well.

Yup, here: http://www.hvlpsales.com/PPS.html

About halfway down.

I'm on it.....thanks Gents !

Do you think / know that pressurized cups are needed for spraying guitar finishes.

Pressurized...Non? Bleeder....Non?
