Post subject:  What is a Bois de Rose b&s set worth these days?

I haven't seen Bois de Rose for sale in a few years. Anyone know who sells dread sized back and side sets and what they're going for these days? General terms, of course , price will depend on quality, figure, etc.

I'm asking because I am thinking about thinning the tonewood pile, and I only have one set of Bois de Rose, so I may get rid of it (in the classifieds section here of course). But it sure is nice looking wood! I'll post a picture once I go take one of the set in the basement.

Thanks,

Laurie

Gilmer had a few 3 piece back sets with sides up, maybe they're still around.

Actually it's a palisander set. Sorry...

I think the last set Gilmer had was around $300 or more.

I don't think one can legally get a set from Madagascar anymore and the tree only grows there & is endangered.

Hope this helps some.

Although that was back in 2011, so you should at least be able to charge equal if not more, despite not being a big retailer.

I'll be in the audience, trying to resist further hoarding

That photo is pretty old, but it was already pretty much fully oxidized then, I think. It came with a coat of shellac already on it too, so it looks pretty much black in anything but direct sunlight. Seems to be quite stable for a flatsawn set, too. Tap is a lot like cocobolo. Definitely belongs in the super special pile :)

I'm afraid you would reject it, when you tap it and it sings, it has a Canadian accent!!

Now I have to hike up the price...not one person on this forum wished me happy birthday on Tuesday!! Isnt that why we have a birthday today section?? pfft

I was so depressed I made a silly Taylor BTO guitar purchase, so now I really should sell the set. :(

Thanks Meddling.....you may qualify for the "not-so-ridiculously-inflated-price" and in Canadian dollars!! I can't let it go too cheap, I tapped it yesterday and its still ringing!!

I sent you a card on time, Laurie, honest! Canada Post should have it in your hands in a couple of weeks. You know the drill! [headinwall]
I've got a hoard of Cnd.Tire money with your name on it, so just say the word. If you are in B.C. my wife can pick it up next month. OK? :D

I have just one set left. It is a fantastic tonewood - right up there with Brazilian RW but unfortunately, won't be as appealing by name to most customers as Madagascar, Cocobolo, and Brazilian RW.

We were so close....just got Canadian Tire here in town about 6 months ago, but I'm on the east coast (east of quebec), not the west coast...sorry

That set is really stunning. If it helps, I found a website that said said bois de rose is actually Madagascar rosewood, so call it all Madagascar because the Internet it always right!

Thanks for the birthday wishes Miguel...

I'm Glad no one asked the "why buy a Taylor BTO when you have hundreds of people here that can build you a guitar" question. beehive

Well I did think "why buy a BTO when it's so easy to build one that sounds better?" But then I decided you must have your reasons, and it would be rude to pry.

But more importantly, you need to post a bigger/closer/better lit/something to where we can actually see it photo of that bois de rose set. And maybe scrape the surface, so it doesn't diffuse the light so much, and so you can snort the shavings  Except then you'll probably be addicted and unable to sell the set.

I actually do have a tough time convincing myself to wear a dust mask when working with BDR and BRW.

Hopefully someone also in Canada can give it a good home. At least as I understand it, Lacey Act makes pretty much everything illegal, and Madagascar woods seem particularly iffy given the messy situation over there. And I really shouldn't be buying any more wood anyway...

As for the BTO, I don't mind sharing my thoughts :P

I am a Taylor fan, how they feel and play, but I've only heard one all koa guitar. You're right, a custom should sound better, but how do I pick a custom builder if I have never heard or played any of their guitars? I'm far from everyone here and my guitars aren't there for fit and finish yet, maybe in 10 or 20 years, but I want one to play now ;)

Then comes the cost, if I can find someone to build my all koa guitar. Base guitar...$2k-$4k? How much extra for an insanely figured all koa set? $1000 to $2000? Now add upcharges for the cutaway, electronics, abalone rosette/top trim/fretboard/bridge/headstock. Even the 510 tuners may be extra, plus flamed maple binding, and the extra matching koa headplate on the back of the headstock (Taylor calls it a backstrap).

Now I need to find someone, if they are outside of Canada, to go through the proper channels to get the abalone filled guitar across the border!! It came from a US Taylor Dealer in Florida, and was less than my Canadian Taylor dealer could get it for me, and I wanted one for years now, so I hit "buy it now".

Besides, inhibitions may have been lowered by the adult beverages I had too!! Bad combo: Internet, credit card, beer, birthday....let that be a lesson to you all

I'm not trying to be an arss (actually I usually don't have to try, just ask my wife) but are you sure it's Bois de Rose?

It looks a lot like Amazon. Amazon sort stinks IMO & is sort of pungent while Bois de Rose is more perfume like.
