This SJ has been a long time coming, well over a year between injuries (torn thigh ligaments/sprayed blood over the top early on), lots of working away, building a buffer and a (big) learning curve on my first spray/buff job. Anyway, it's a bit of a monster, but I suppose it is what it is. Black Walnut B & S, Englemann top, double X bracing, EIR fretboard and bridge. Wide fretboard, 46 mm at the nut. Silkwood bindings, 3 piece Hog/Massacar Ebony neck, Bubunga headplate and tail wedge, Walnut backstrap. Rosette is Bubinga/Maple w/BWB, Soundhole bound with Walnut/BWB purfs. Lots of firsts for me - First SJ, live back, double X bracing, the woods themselves, side port, bound sound hole, head layout for a straight string pull, which I actually drew out before seeing and buying the Gore book as I was building (although I've seen plenty similar on electrics) . As an experiment, I incorporated side mass mounts on the rims and tuned frequencies to 100/180/215 Hz. Also used the brass bar mortised in the neck heel for fixing the necks. I won't in any way blame the members of the forum for its genesis, but would like to thank all you guys for guiding/helping me though this build. Thanks for looking. |

It is a beautiful guitar. What makes you call it a monster? |

That's as pretty a guitar as I've seen in a while! I think the head stock design and rosette really work well with the SJ body shape. And I love walnut in all its forms. Patrick |

Really gorgeous! Very classy curves built in to the design. I really think the straight supra-nut string path is a great way to go. ![]() |

Colin, sure looks good to me; a lot of firsts for you it seems. I always like seeing the list of woods; not sure I would have guessed walnut. Is that bear claw on your top? and I almost missed the clear pick guard. Nice job ![]() |

Thanks, one and all, for all the comments.. Tony, I suppose I called it a monster for a couple of reasons. The original plan was – keep it simple, bit classy (three woods, stealth binding, etc sort of thing) but with a more modern style (obviously). As with many builds, it seems, things don't go as planned, or to schedule. This was definitely one of them. Between breaking and scorching 3 side sets (Bubinga originally, then 2 Hog sets, with controller probs and severe run-out on reclaimed stuff), the blood on the top (I nearly scrapped it), various other “opportunities” that presented themselves along the way, then finishing in general, etc, etc, I was having to, shall I say, "think on my feet" a lot. I won't bore you with the complete list, but I did learn a fair bit! Also, it's not exactly “everybody's” taste, like for example, maybe a traditional style build. Fred and Beth – muchas gracias! Means a lot having seen your work. Martin – Yes, some bearclaw on the top – I like clear pickguards in principle, seems a shame to hide any wood with plastic! |

Very Nice! The soundport looks interesting... What is the circle made of? Can you show a closeup? |

Bit untidy, but happy to oblige. It's a disc of Silkwood (same wood as the bindings, supported on an EIR strip inside) with 2 x BWB purlings as soundport binding. This was not a planned "decorative" element, rather a "fix" to get body resonance frequency down, as was the soundhole binding. |
