I've started reading a blog called 'Design Matters' which talks about the classical way of designing by proportions and feel. Recently it linked to a book called 'Violins and the art of measurement' and on it's website it had this animation of how the body of a violin is developed using just a compass and ruler. Apparently, renaissance luthiers believed that musical instruments should be made according to the rules of music, with 'harmonic proportions'. I found it fascinating so I thought I'd share it: http://kigiri.free.fr/tdl/page3/files/page3_5.swf |

Those exercises make me wonder which came first, the chicken or the egg. There are violins built with many different shapes. It would be hard to believe they were all made with geometric constructs. |
