Post subject: | Suitable Material for Side Mass |
Has anyone tried doing the side mass attachment (a la Trevor Gore)? I am currently doing one and before I close the box I would like at least to get the side mass attached 1st if possible. What would be a suitable material for the side mass? I thought of using fishing weight but they are typically made of lead and considering the toxicity of the material, I don't really want to use it if possible. Anyone has any good suggestions? Thanks! |

I am using bright mild steel. Are you pre-loading the sides before assembly? How do you know how much to use? My understanding is that side mass is used to lower (trim) the top resonance after the box is assembled, and testing the coupled top, body and back frequencies. |

Thanks Colin and Trevor for the suggestion. Well I just wanna make sure I am able to install it via the sound hole before I close the box. |

Don't worry about fitting it through the soundhole, just glue it to the outside. Call it - Mass, externally, surfacially secured (M.E.S.S.) and sell it as a feature. Isn't that what the best luthiers do? Trevor, Will D.U. give ones guitars that penetrating sound? |
