Frgie me, Its been a while since li built a classical From the Cumpiano book, I made the outline of the top with the cork lining all the way around and a fla piece abovr the sound hole. My question is, when the braces are glued down, should I use that cork lining and give it a little dome or glue them down using the flat workboard as the only thing under the top? Thanks, Dave |

Use the liner and give it some dome. It'll make it more responsive. |

Thanks Waddy. I REALLY want to just put it on the 25' radius dish, but Cumpiano didnt tell me to and I am building a 37 Hauser and I dont think he used a dish either. |

I've been trying to follow Cumpiano myself, and I think he only used the cork lining when gluing the sides down to the top and then again when the back is glued on. As I understand the steps as outlined in his book, the only curve in the top is introduced by the slight bow in the lower transverse brace which is glued on the top last. Would like to see a little more dome, but I think if you follow the book there will not be much of one on the lower bout. |

I brace my tops in a separate work board so that I can dome it at about 28' under the bridge only. I then transfer to the cork outlined solera and let the top hang down in the center however it wants to during subsequent construction. I do not actually use the construction solera to dome the top at all. It is done separate. This allows me to construct one top while another is on the solera. It is also much easier to maneuver the top under construction in and out of the go bar deck with a smaller work board. Shouldn't be a problem, as long as you left the upper bout flat. Make sure you fully support the edges of the top when you are working the sides to fit. Are you building a box and planning to attach a neck? |

Waddy, The UTB will be glued on flat. Integral Neck will be used. So far, it looks fantastic. The last time I built a classical, it turned out AWESOME. It is truly the envy of a lot of players around here. Hauser's plan produces an instrument that BARKS like a dog, but sings like a bird at the same time. If I'd only known when I built it, what I know now about building guitars and working with wood. If I'd only had the tools I have now.... I can't imagine how it would have sounded. But then I don't have to imagine it. I'm building another one. Dave |
