I need to detach a fretboard from neck. I used titebond to glue it. I own a heated blanket. Is it possible to disassemble just by heating? In case, what temperature? What about the varnish that is below the neck? Will the heat damage it? |

Heat will do it, the glue just gets soft and you can slip a knife into the joint to loosen it. |

You need to get it to about 140F. Put some sort of shield over the top and any finished parts nearby: some finishes bubble that those temperatures. It will take some time to heat right through. I prefer to use the blanket on a low setting on my dimmer, so that it doesn't get too hot. It takes longer, but might result in less chance of cracking the board. Titebond joints can also be loosened using acetic acid, AKA vinegar. Use a stainless steel knife if you try this: iron and vinegar is the old timer's recipe for a permanent black stain that can penetrate very deeply. |

Todd, how did you get started? Was the bridge lifting already? Could you see this working to remove bridges that were not lifting? |

A film between the bridge and top of .008 has to be an awful sound killer. Not sure that I have heard this name before.........................a decent guitar once fixed....??? Tom |

Aside from steam I have never recommended using water to reverse a resin-modified PVA joint, such as titebond... The same applies to acetic acid. It's a fine approach for hide glue, but unless the joint was assembled using plain old white glue, it will take a long time and interact with the wood (and potentially other adhesive bond lines.) Heat is definitely the way to go. However, contrary to one of the above posts, the temperature of the glueline needs to reach about 200°F or more. Have I seen PVA adhesives that can easily be separated at 140°F? Yes. But I have also seen titebond original tear out wood fiber at 150°F. |
