Post subject:  source for off-white tap plate stock ?

I have a customer who would like cream or ivory colored tap plates on his flamenco guitar (ivory colored, not ivoroid). I could make something with epoxy resins, but I'd rather find the right material in sheet stock. So far, no luck. I'm looking for plastic in a .010-.020" thickness. Any ideas?

You'll probably have to get on the phone with some plastic suppliers, hobby shops, craft stores, etc. Not everything is listed online.

ABS used to come in a 'natural' translucent cream color, but I haven't seen it for a while.

Another idea would be to contact some custom guitar pick makers. They tend to have lots of thin sheet stock around.

Buy the white & experiment with staining it.

If push comes to shove (as they say) you might want to check out the Formica/Laminex ranges. If you go to a supplier you should be able to get off-cuts of just the ~0.020 laminate. Wouldn't be my first choice, but if there's nothing else...and a better tap tone than floppy plastic.

Those are all good ideas. Thanks.

I have some solid surface (corian) material that is ivory colored off white, be more than happy to send you some. Let me know. T

If Corian could be brought to an appropriate thickness it would be one of my first choices. A P-LAM like Formica would be a nightmare, absolutely no chance to level anything out after it's glued in. The color is only on the surface, maybe a mil thick at best so it can be scratched through quite easily, the sub layer of the finish is always bright white. Color core Formica may be an option but I think it only comes in the thicker VGS type (.050") and it is difficult to cut and shape as it has a tendency to split and tear.

The beauty of solid surface materials is machinability, yes it comes in a .500" sheet but can be sawn, planed, routed, sanded and polished easier than perhaps any material I know. Accept perhaps lignum vitae. :) T
