I got some more repair work in- a 43' Martin 00-18 for a neck reset, new bridge and frets.
I love working on these old guitars.

Pore filling #2 and #3. [xx(] I also picked out the wood for #4 and #5, sanded and joined them, and bent one set of sides.

Just finished spraying the first one I've done with my own 16" LB shape with first arm bevel. The next one I'll go further south with the bevel and try not to crack the top purfing. duh . A learning experience every step of the way. A friend came into the shop when I was just putting a bit in the router to cut the sound hole. He left and I started cutting. I didn't tighten the bit. This one also got my first bound sound hole.

One of my other friends walked in and commented "I guess those are for women eh"

The back and sides are from some Koa boards a buddy brought back from Hawaii. Even without curl, it is sure beautiful wood.

Enjoy The Day

No pictures (unless you need to see a zpoxy pore-filled body being sanded back to wood.)

(1) Finish sanding and pore-filling a lutz/EIR Romanillos classical

(2) With input from Don Williams and Clay Schaeffer, putting together templates and bending forms for a Type 1.

(3) Thinking about (as opposed to actually building yet) a circle cutter and veneer thicknesser from Bill Nesse's instructions, and, related ...

(4) Trying to design my first version of a rosette mosaic.

After hemming and hawing for a few years and saying I'd rather get guitars built than worry about rosettes in the few minutes I can allot to the activity, I'm ready to bite the bullet - In the classical world, not having your own rosette is roughly equivalent to not signing your work.

Had this set of sapele sitting around for about 6 years or more. Finally decided to use it for the Healdsburg show.

Aside from quite a few repairs that came in and are now heading out I got to start carving braces on tops for the next two builds.

Nice projects, all. Wow, that Saeple is unbelievable!!!

I have an OM hanging with sealer on, waiting for weather to be warm enough (on a day I don't have to do my paying job) to spray lacquer
Meanwhile, there's a tenor uke in finishing stages, who's neck I finished carving and sanding today.
Next up is a pair of slope-shoulder dreads...new shape for me, and I just completed the mold, bending form and template for those, as well as joining the top for the one getting a Shane/Lutz top. That Lutz rings like a bell, even in the rough!

Colin, are you using the Enduro-var on a guitar? I use it for kitchen cabinetry (semi-gloss) and find it great to spray. I have the Fuji Super 4 Gold/XPC, and it is a dream to use!

Along with a few commissions I have going, I've started working on this years "bluegrass batch" (2 dreads, 2 F5's), to be ready for this summer. Actually I'm considering keeping this one for myself, I only have some of my own very early guitars around the house, it would be nice to have something that actually inspired my to play . Its some pretty decent madrose, to be paired with a nice red spruce top, in a fairly traditional looking package.

What did you use to dye the top with? Are you happy with the results? It looks good with the contrast of the rosette.

Ed,
I used colortone liquid dye from stew mac. Its the same stuff I used to dye the back and sides and back of the neck. I am happy with the results, though dying the spruce top took a little more time than the maple back and sides. The spruce didnt soak up the dye as readily. I personally like the results much better than painting the top black. You can still see the character of the top not just a solid black color.

I love the contrast it gives against the spalted maple rosette as well. Also the undyed curyly maple bindings really stand out too, its kinda hard to tell from my crappy pictures. I really need to invest in a camera.

thanks for the compliments and if ya have any more questions let me know.
