I use a dremel and stewmac rosette jig to cut the soundhole rosettes of my guitars, but today the 1/16" Spiral down cut bit I've been using snapped and I need to get a new one. I hate stewmac's pricing and shipping costs ($8 to ship a toothpick sized bit???) so I was wondering if there were any other places I could buy similar bits at a lower price.

Home Depot sells Dremel bits...not sure how convenient that is for you

Sorry to go off topic a bit but what is up with Stew Mac's crazy prices?

I would suggest checking hardware stores locally. Sometimes they will surprise you with what they have in stock. I just picked up a 1/16" downcut spiral bit at my local hardware store for $12, made by Freud.

For rosettes I don't use down cuts but I do want sharp. When you use a down cut the chips are pushed down , this builds up heat and shortens the life of the tool. On cleared holes you clear the ships and down cuts may be fine. I would say for the best advice use sharp up cuts they are much cheaper.
I use Burchett Quality Tools. Often they are less than 8 buck. When you see fibers forming on the edge it is time to change the bit. Up cuts on rosettes will last longer than down cuts because of the heat build up.

They give great service, but I agree, their shipping rate policy/schedule has a lot to be desired IMO.
