For a rift sawn bridge blank, which grain direction do you use (1 or 2)?

I use no. 2 grain orientation. Read somewhere it was less likely to break out at the saddle slot. Made sense to me.

After reading that other thread, I'm also starting to wonder if it might be a good idea to saw bridge blanks a little off perpendicular to the grain. Kinda like this...

I've repaired quite a few classicals with that particular type of split.
