I have a client that is bringing in a guitar because it has some sort of "gunk" foggy area, that accumulated from the use of his Ergoplay stand. He has a nitro finish on the guitar, and wants to see what can be done to remove it from the guitar, he tried naphtha, but to no success. I was wondering what might have caused this and what a viable solution would be?  thanks Jonathan |

Nitro does not get along with a lot of plastics/vinyl. It softens the finish and really can cause a mess. Never leave a nitro finished guitar on a stand with plastic/vinyl always have cloth between. This is not the first time I've heard of those suction cups leaving marks in nitro. Once you fix it I would suggest that the owner does not leave it attached. Usually lemon oil or naptha will take most gooey stuff off nitro. Warm, soapy water sometimes works, and I even used some Fast Orange once. If you are very careful.... you could try acetone, but you have to use very light pressure, not leaving the applicator (rag, or whatever) on the surface but a few seconds. Use as a last resort. |

If only the surface of the finish has been affected you may be able to lightly sand and rebuff that area |

If it is the type of reaction I have seen from some stands with foam rubber it has likely gone deep into the finish. Sand and buff may work, most likely will need a spot refinish. |
