Post subject:  is it too late to pore fill again after tru-oil application?

Hello,

Only my second guitar and the first one I tried to pore fill.
I used timbermate to fill the pores on mahogany. I thought that it looked fine so I went ahead and put on a coat of tru-oil. Now the pores seem way more visiable. Can I still apply pore filler or is it too late? If its not too late, do I need to sand back down to the wood?

Thanks for any advice!

Gary

Just apply more Timbermate. One coat of Tru Oil is nothing but you want the filler in the pores and not sat on the surface.

The other option is to use the tru oil as your sanding medium and wet sand with it, ala' french polishing to fill the pores....easy.....

Tru-Oil will fill the pores if you keep coating, and lightly sand back between coats. You can do 3 to 4 coats a day that way. Because you are sanding between coats, you aren't building much thickness, but the coats stay in the pores. Depending on the wood, 12 to 15 coats should get you pretty flat.

What Waddy said. If you sealed the pores with shellac first, it will only take about half that many coats of TruOil to fill the pores.
