Hi..
I need info about hand planer concave and convex, that using for archtop,.. anyone know how to build that hand planer (the web sources), I want to build my own that hand planer and I need to know about the radius..thank's a lot

Herry, if you already have a plane you can achieve the convex/concave shape you're after by applying more or less pressure on the edges of your plane iron while sharpening. |

Hand planes can most simply be made using the Krenov style approach. Taking a wide and thick enough piece of wood and sawing it into three parts. You want to saw it so you have two sides and a body. The body of the plane is the width of the iron you choose + about a 1/16" so you have a little lateral adjustment. This might be less if you are making a small plane. You're first order of business will be to find the blade you want use. A small blade can easily be made by you if you buy some O1 tool steel blanks. The O1 should be annealed (soft) so you can work it. Then you can harden it yourself with a map gas torch and some peanut oil. Small blades are very simple to harden yourself. I made myself a small set of hollow and round moulding planes using O1 tool steel and was very pleased with how they turned out, especially the blades. I wouldn't be without them. Larry Williams sells a DVD at Lie Nielsen toolworks on making traditional side escapement planes that is extremely well made. But this is a different style of plane all together. I suggest you do some research on the internet on making Krenov Style planes and you will find everything you need to know. Easier to see it then for me to explain it. And if you decide to make your own blade then research O1 tool steel, working it and hardening it. Ron Hock has a good amount of information on his blog or you can see if he makes the right size blade, his blades are great. |
