I need some help figuring this out. My latest archtop has been hanging in a local music store over the holidays. I went to check on it the other day and was unpleasantly surprised to find the ebony binding had separated from the body by almost 1/16". It will not go back, it's now too long. This makes no sense to me because the saddle for the tail-gut is installed after the binding is in place plus RH is much lower now than when I installed it. If it is a humidity issue I would think the binding would get taller not longer. Any thoughts? I'll post pics in a reply since I'm on my phone the pics always seem to insert weird. |

I think the top has shrunk rather than the ebony grown. |

The finish is fine except right were the binding is seperated. Also it seems to me that if the top had shrunk that the binding would pull away in a more uniform way not just this one piece. |

Is it pulled away where a top/back brace was inlet into the lining? |

It's an archtop so the braces never meet the linings. I guess I'll stick it in a case with a Dampit in the F-hole and see if the gap closes? |

What glue did you use for the bindings? Does the tailgut saddle have even a slight angle to it where it meets the bindings? Does the saddle appear to be exactly where it was, or does it appear to have shifted forward ever so slightly? What was the RH when you installed the binding, and were the bindings in your possession for a while before installing? If yes, how long? What is the RH now? |

Finishes, especially fresh ones, are far more elastic than most people give them credit for. A panel in a 5 piece cabinet door can expand and contract 3/16" seasonally depending on size and specie yet the finish keeps pace with it. Though I will admit I would have expected to see more grain ridging on the top if it had dried out significantly but wood (such as the binding) doesn't tend to expand much in length due to moisture swings either. |
