Found this old bed frame kicking around in my cellar. Thought it was just pine or something until I started cutting it. Amazingly the wood is pretty fairly quarter sawn. My guess is either cherry or a mahogany. Any help would be appreciated. Its a phone picture :-(

Yes, based on those two choices, I'd say mahogany. In any event, if it's quartered hardwood, you can use it on instruments.

Appears to be a blurry Brown wood to my eyes. In that case it's Mahogany.

An endgrain view would be more helpful. From that picture it could be anything.

The color looks like mahogany, but the well defined grain lines look like some kind of spruce or other softwood. I don't see the ribbon figure that you would expect with the interlocking grain of mahogany. A pic of the end grain and/or planed surface would make it a lot easier to tell.

Are you sure it's not western redcedar or redwood? I can't see any pores in that picture, and the color and grain lines look right. Does it smell like anything?

Seems to me that when Honduras mahog starts to burn, it has a nice spicy incense smell. How does it taste?

Unfortunately what little I had was resawn and being used to make an Uke for a friend (no end grain pics). As far as smell no real odor when cutting it other then musty basement its been sitting in for 20 years. For now I will call it mahogany until one of my carpenter friends corrects me. Thanks all.

The picture is not too informative, the sample being rough sawn. The fact that it came from an old bed rail leads me to think it is red gum. There are lots of pieces of American furniture out there from the 20s to the 40s that have red gum as the primary and secondary wood. Easy to finish and stain and relatively strong.
